SPACED: NOW THE US CAN BASK IN ITS GLORY. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO.

At long last, American geeks can experience the

UK’s beloved SPACED in all its glory on DVD. The most important geek TV show of the last decade, it starred Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes before they were ‘serious actors’ (those were affectionate inverted commas, Simon mate), and was directed by one Edgar Wright, all of whom millions more people know now through films such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, or through Jessica’s stunning turn in last year’s Doctor Who story Human Nature/The Family of Blood. These two series’ worth of TV episodes captured a generation of geeks, nerds and twentysomethings perfectly, and for all its spoofery, is closer to real life than pretty much anything.

‘Spaced’ is the British equivalent of The Breakfast Club, Clerks, Mallrats, Pretty in Pink and St Elmo’s Fire all rolled into one. It is hilarious, moving, touching and spot on with every single character that it contains, from Tim Bisley the comic geek and Daisy Steiner the relentlessly lazy wannabe journalist, to Tyres and Mike and everyone else, it is a slice of life in the modern age for those of us that are still struggling to figure out how to be a grown-up.

 

With the US release of Spaced on DVD, fans will be able to experience the show as it was intended, and rejoice even more that the US remake has been aborted. This was great news for fans all over the world, as there really is only one version of Spaced. It’d be like trying to remake Fawlty Towers without John Cleese, or Star Wars without lightsabers. It just wouldn’t be right. Of course, Simon and Edgar are now living the dreams of every geek like Tim Bisley and making big movies themselves. Simon of course is playing Scotty in JJ Abram’s revamp of the Star Trek franchise, and Edgar is aiming his directorial talents at comic book movies. 

Much has been made of whether there will ever be a third series of the show, and I’d like to echo the thoughts of many, many fans of the show in saying that I hope it doesn’t happen. Spaced is perfectly contained in those humble two series, and if you watch them again you’ll see that they have a very satisfying beginning, middle and end. The saga is complete, and people everywhere still think those little dogs are all called Colin.
