At long last, American geeks can experience the
UK’s beloved SPACED in all its glory on DVD. The most important geek TV show of the last decade, it starred Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes before they were ‘serious actors’ (those were affectionate inverted commas, Simon mate), and was directed by one Edgar Wright, all of whom millions more people know now through films such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, or through Jessica’s stunning turn in last year’s Doctor Who story Human Nature/The Family of Blood. These two series’ worth of TV episodes captured a generation of geeks, nerds and twentysomethings perfectly, and for all its spoofery, is closer to real life than pretty much anything.

Much has been made of whether there will ever be a third series of the show, and I’d like to echo the thoughts of many, many fans of the show in saying that I hope it doesn’t happen. Spaced is perfectly contained in those humble two series, and if you watch them again you’ll see that they have a very satisfying beginning, middle and end. The saga is complete, and people everywhere still think those little dogs are all called Colin.
